VISA 385 Drawing from Memory

This studio course is an exploration, by way of drawing and painting, of our own memories. The goal is to produce a body of work that is singularly our own. We will develop this work by a series of exercises that have two simultaneous goals: To increase our ability to summon past experience into the present; and to communicate these experiences to other people through images. We will pay particular attention to our senses and their relationship to our memories. Our hands will explore a variety of drawing materials and processes with an emphasis on practicality. Along the way we will wade into the contemporary discussions, from philosophy, literature, neuroscience, and psychology that are situated around memory. This course will raise our conscious awareness of modern and contemporary artists who draw to remember.
