MEDA 215 Just Design: Fundamentals of Graphic Design

This studio course is an overview of the fundamental techniques, terms, concepts and formal strategies involved in Graphic Design. This course extends the learning developed in ARTS 111: Two-Dimensional Design by focusing on images and words and the way they communicate together. Through exercises and project learning we will build skills in imagemaking, typography, composition, interaction of color, and organization. In all cases, design will be studied as a means toward expression or the communication of meaning. Through visual examples special attention will be paid to the role of graphic design in culture, and the responsibilities held by graphic designers. This course will be taught primarily on the computer with directed learning in the Adobe Creative Suite - specifically Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. This class is cross listed in the Visual Arts and Media Arts.
